A Sutton United Front: Collins Keeps Cool to Deny York

Whilst Sutton’s winless run away from home continued on Saturday at York the majority of supporters would have left in good spirits after a late equaliser secured a point.

It was a rather bizarre game, affected by several odd refereeing decisions. Indeed manager Paul Doswell himself admitted after the game that the penalty decisions in Sutton’s favour were ‘soft’ and that York ought to have had a penalty themselves. However the decisions weren’t all one way, with Dean Beckwith receiving a second yellow card and his marching orders after what appeared to be a simple accidental collision off the ball.

Jamie Collins deserves particular praise for his performance, playing on despite a head injury and keeping his cool to score not once, but twice from the penalty spot.

No doubt the excellent travelling support gave the players a boost as well – 138 supporters making the long journey up to York is a very impressive effort. This Saturday there’s a break in league action as the U’s make the short journey to Dartford for an FA Cup 1st round tie. The Darts are in excellent form having won their last 7 competitive games (excluding Kent County Cup) and will fancy themselves to cause an upset. It is sure to be a close game, and I don’t think Doswell and the team will be too disappointed with a draw and replay at Gander Green Lane. With a crowd of over 2000 expected, and hordes of those in amber and chocolate to make the trip and support the team it looks set to be a great day.
