There were fireworks at the KNK Stadium this afternoon when a three goal blast in the space of four second half minutes demolished in form Cray Wanderers as Tooting put on probably their most complete performance of the season so far and climbed back up to third place in the table.
The first chance of the game actually fell the way of the visitors as Brandon Scott fired just over the Tooting crossbar in the 5th minute of the game. Ten minutes later the Terrors had their first real sight on goal when Taurean Roberts beat two men out on the left, cut in and shot right footed across the goal, only to see the ‘keeper palm the ball away with his left hand for a corner. On 21 minutes, Mike Dixon appeared to be through on goal but his effort was kept out by a good save from Nick Blue in the Wanderers goal.
The breakthrough for Tooting finally came two minutes later in the 23rd minute when a shot from Jordan Wilson was saved by Blue. The ball came back out to Peter Wedgeworth who slipped the ball inside to Billy Dunn in a fairly central position just outside the box. Dunn took aim, shot and beat the ‘keeper to put the Terrors one up. Tooting did have the ball in the back of the net for a second time just four minutes later however Mike Dixon’s effort was ruled out for offside.
The Terrors started the second half brightly and just two minutes into it, Jordan Wilson fired just over visitors’ crossbar. With 60 minutes on the clock, the blue touch paper was lit as Mike Dixon found himself in space on the edge of the box and struck a fierce drive that found the back of the net to double Tooting’s advantage. Within two minutes of the restart, it was three as Chace O'Neill carved out an opportunity for himself and from just inside the box, placed his right footed effort wide of Nick Blue and into the back of the Wanderers net. There was still more to come as on 64 minutes, a shot from Billy Dunn on the edge of the box was parried by Blue low down to his left but it was Mike Dixon who was on hand first to pick up the pieces and bury the ball high into the roof of the net for his second and Tooting’s fourth of the afternoon. There was an opportunity for Man of the Match Mike Dixon to complete his hat trick in the 71st minute but unfortunately on this occasion he pulled his shot just wide of Blue’s right hand post.
