A Sutton United Front: Where Did It All Go Wrong?

For those who made the trip up to North Ferriby at the weekend the overriding emotion would be a strong sense of disappointment in a Sutton performance which never really got going at all, resulting in defeat to the league’s bottom side.

The manner in which the goals were conceded was particularly disappointing – they were both fairly basic mistakes and completely avoidable, and it left Doswell’s men with a mountain to climb in the second half.

To the credit of the players they did at least give it a go and clawed a goal back through Biamou, but it was too little too late.

It’s clear to see away form is the problem this season. Indeed on home form alone United would place 7th in the table, but on away form they would sit a lowly 19th.

One theory as to why away form is so poor is that the players struggle with travelling long distances on the morning of a game.

Ultimately there’s not a lot that can be done about this – the part time status of the players, and the large cost of staying overnight mean that practically it couldn’t really happen.

Whilst long distance travel isn’t exactly ideal I don’t think it really fully explains the poor performance at Ferriby.

Plenty of poor away results this season have actually been coupled with fairly good performances, and Sutton will need to try and get those performance levels back soon – starting with Boreham Wood on Tuesday.
