They say that teams that win trophies are those that can grind out the results, even when they’re not playing well. If that’s the case then Tooting showed all the credentials this afternoon as they were pushed all the way by a hardworking Godalming Town side languishing at the bottom of the table.

Whether it was the extreme adverse temperature, the delayed kick off caused by the late arrival of several of the Godalming Town team or whether the players simply went into the game thinking they were in for an easy afternoon we shall never know. However for the best part of the first 75 minutes, the high flying Terrors failed to play any coherent football, struggling to string their passes together and frequently giving the ball away once pressed.

It eventually took a quality strike from the league’s leading scorer Billy Dunn to light the blue touch paper and finally put the Terrors ahead with just 12 minutes remaining on the clock. Both teams had earlier been reduced to ten men when midway through the second period, Jordan Wilson clashed with Godalming’s Chris Wales and both players received their second yellows of the game. It was Tooting however that seemed to benefit the most from the extra space that this created on the field and as the half progressed it was always Tooting that looked the more likely to score but without ever being in full control of the game. Dunn eventually produced his moment of magic on 78 minutes when receiving the ball after some good work from Danny Bassett out on Tooting’s left and this then appeared to give the home players an immediate boost. Once in the front, the Terrors seemed to be far more comfortable in possession of the ball and despite not increasing their advantage they never looked in danger of surrendering the three points.
