Sutton Succumb to Wood On Night of Crazy Train Delays

Sutton gave a marginally improved performance from the weekend, but were still unable to claim anything from the game, furthering their struggles on the road this season

The best early chance fell to Chris Dickson after a quick counter attack allowed McAllister to head the ball back across the box, but Dickson caught the ball all wrong and looped it harmlessly over the bar from 10 yards out. The Wood started to assert themselves after this early scare and took the lead in the 22nd minute, an Andrade cross flicked on to the far post where Jeffrey was waiting to take a touch and smash home past Ross Worner. The game was far from a classic and there were few chances for either side, though Worner did have to make a good save to deny Jeffrey a second goal before the break.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first, with Dickson getting into a good position but unable to make the most of it. This time it was an excellent free kick from Bailey creating the opportunity but the header was just too high. Former QPR player Angelo Balanta was the main focal point of the hosts’ attack and created chances for both Clifford and Jeffrey, though neither managed to test Worner in the Sutton goal. Jeffrey had been lively all game and ought to have put the game to bed in the last few minutes, but his shot was well saved again by Worner.

Boreham Wood were almost made to regret that miss as United pushed hard for an equaliser in stoppage time, helped by some nervous keeping by Grant Smith. The young keeper came for a cross he was never going to get, allowing Gomis the opportunity to fire off a shot from inside the box. Luckily for Smith there were several defenders on the line to back him up and the shot cannoned away of one of them, before the rebound was wildly lashed over the bar. There was still time for one last chance as Sutton were awarded a dubious corner. The first ball was headed away but Worner, up from the back to try and boost the height in the box, won a bicycle kick to put the ball back towards the danger area. Alas it fell to a white shirt and the full time whistle was blown as the ball was cleared up field.

For many of the supporters who had made the journey though things were about to get worse, with a series of Thameslink cancellations causing travel chaos. A lucky few made the choice to take the tube, avoiding the worst of the trouble, but those who caught the last Sutton service were stranded after being stuck behind a broken down train at Herne Hill. Eventually a train took them back to Blackfriars, with taxis the final method of transport used – it wasn’t until after 3am that the group made it back to Sutton.

Manager Paul Doswell, speaking to SUFCtv, gave his thoughts on the game:

“It was a decent performance but a disappointing result; we’ve got 3 home games now so we can’t wait to get back to Gander Green Lane”

“I said to the lads in there I couldn’t fault the effort, I wasn’t happy after Saturday’s game up at North Ferriby, but I don’t think there was a lot wrong there tonight”

“We seem to go in little patches where parts of it we can’t score, and parts of it we can’t stop scoring”

“We do need results against Aldershot and Dover – if we get 2 wins there everyone’s really happy again. If we don’t win any of those 2 games we’re in a position of looking over our shoulder”
