It was far from a perfect performance from Sutton at the weekend but the job was done and a place in the next round of the FA Trophy duly secured.
Whilst United appeared to have more quality than their opponents but the Somerset side made life difficult for the U’s and could easily have earned a replay at Twerton Park on Tuesday night with McCootie missing a good opportunity and Morgan having one disallowed for offside in the second half.
The early rounds of the competition are always somewhat anticlimactic with the low crowds and quiet atmosphere but it doesn’t take long for interest to get going in a competition where a place at Wembley is the prize.
The draw on Monday will be interesting with many of the National League top sides being knocked out on Saturday – Eastleigh’s defeat and Harlow and Dagenham’s home loss at the hands of Worthing the most notable.
Slightly bizarrely the draw is nationalised already, so a long trip up to Gateshead could be on the cards if the football gods opt against us.
Attentions now though will be on the Wrexham game on Saturday, with points needed to get away from the relegation zone which is now just nine points from United’s current 14th place in the league.
The Dragons have struggled for form recently and went out of the Trophy on Saturday at the hands of Tranmere.
Sutton have already been beaten away to Wrexham this season but were highly unlucky to come away with nothing and will feel they are more than capable of getting the points at fortress Gander Green Lane on Saturday
