A Sutton United Front: 6 The Magic Number

It’s starting to seem as if some all-powerful football god is up against the U’s away from home this season after yet another defeat on the road.

I wouldn’t argue that we particularly deserved to win the game, but a defeat was certainly harsh given that Bromley’s winner was their first real effort on goal.

In truth it had been a scrappy game with 0-0 written all over it, so it was particularly frustrating when Dennis crashed home an effort from the edge of the box in the very last seconds.

I imagine the New Year’s Day game on a better pitch will make for a better footballing spectacle and with strong form at home United will be looking for immediate revenge.

It is often said that 50 points is the safety mark in a 24 team division, meaning Sutton will secure safety with 6 more victories in their remaining games.

Survival in our first season in the National League will be an adequate achievement, especially given the impressive FA Cup run – a similarly strong performance in the Trophy will be very pleasing.

Having mentioned the FA Cup however it is important the AFC Wimbledon game doesn’t become a distraction on Sunday; the league is the bread and butter after all and work is still needed to ensure we definitely do stay up.

Indeed a nice win over Bromley could boost confidence levels heavily as well as having all its practical league table uses, and I wouldn’t have thought we’ll be seeing many players rested.
