Sutton put their Boxing Day disappointment behind them with a convincing 2-0 win at home to their local rivals Bromley, kicking off the New Year in style.
It was the away side who started marginally stronger but there were few chances in the first 10 minutes as the game threatened to be a dull and scrappy affair similar to the Boxing Day game. However United soon sprung into life and asserted their control on the game. Dan Fitchett drilled an effort just wide from the edge of the box before a deflection on a through ball just took it away from Bedsente Gomis, who would surely have been in to score otherwise. Worner was on the most part no more than a spectator but did make one excellent save from Jack Holland’s header from a corner, before claiming the ball at second attempt. Not to be outdone one of Worner’s predecessors, Alan Julian, made a good save low to his right from a Gomis effort. The pressure eventually told just before half time when a fantastic set piece delivery from Roarie Deacon was met by the determined Biamou, whose header had enough power to beat Julian. There were complaints from Bromley as the goal came four minutes into stoppage time when only two minutes had been added.
The second half saw the U’s continue to control the game, and they were desperately unlucky not to go 2-0 up when Craig Eastmond hit a dipping and swerving volley from all of 35 yards that came off both post and cross bar before bouncing away. It wasn’t long before that second goal came though, a corner only half cleared with Hudson-Odoi picking up the pieces and smashing home from just inside the box. Further chances followed, the best of them coming to Dan Fitchett who just couldn’t get over the ball when a cross came in, his knee the part of the body that made contact with the ball flying harmlessly over the bar. It was substitute Adam May’s chance to go close next, with a ball into the box from exciting new boy Monakana just behind him and another effort from the edge of the box parried away by the busy Julian. Bromley never truly threatened Ross Worner and the five minutes of added time were seen out in comfort by Paul Doswell’s men.
Paul Doswell, speaking to SUFCtv after the game, was pleased with what he saw
“I don’t think either side deserved to win on Boxing Day but today (Bromley manager) Neil Smith at the end has said we comprehensively deserved to win and I’d agree with that assessment – I thought we were excellent today.”
“No disrespect to Bromley but we were confident enough to take Eastmond off, who had been booked for I’m not sure what – I was desperate to get him off the pitch so he wasn’t suspended”
On the FA Cup 3rd round tie against AFC Wimbledon:
“It’s a great occasion coming up, I think we’re all excited about it. We know we’ve got a good chance.”
“We’ve got a whole week to prepare, which we didn’t have for the last game, it means we can work on certain bits.”
“If the team play to that level today, and Wimbledon have a bit of an off day, then we’ve got a chance.”
