A Sutton United Front: Mixed Emotions In Trophy Tie

It was a funny game of mixed emotions on Saturday – I’ve never been so angry at a refereeing performance but I also felt quite proud of the players for holding on for a replay despite playing the majority of the game short on numbers.

It wasn’t so much the red cards that brought about the main criticism of the ref (though he looked far too keen to produce the second red card) but his woeful inconsistency with cards.

Indeed his game was so littered with errors the penalty appeal Jamie Collins had in the first half has gone largely unmentioned.

Admittedly the game was particularly dull in the first half, barring one excellent Ross Worner save, but the 10 men of Sutton looked to attack in the second 45 and were at least equal to their opponents.

However the controversial red card shown to Craig Eastmond in the 75th minute understandably made it into an attack vs defence exercise as remaining players did excellently to shut Boreham Wood out.

A replay on Tuesday night has to be considered a decent outcome, though it will be a tough game with so many injuries and suspensions depleting the squad.

There will be hopes too that all 3 games scheduled between now and the 20th February are played as planned with no postponements so that Craig Eastmond’s suspension is up for the big game against his former side.

Doswell’s comments about bringing in an extra face or two make sense given the mass fixture congestion that will build up over the remaining few months of the season.
