Both depleted in numbers and fatigued after the efforts of recent weeks, Sutton United couldn’t cope with a pacy Boreham Wood side and exited the FA Trophy after a comprehensive 5-0 defeat.
With Biamou injured in the warm up the Sutton side already had a problematic rejigging to deal with, and the home side exploited this early on with former QPR man Angelo Balanta looping a header home after a pinpoint Ben Nunn cross. It was always going to be tough from this point and the U’s struggled to create chances, Baboye Traore coming the closest with a header that unlike Balanta’s effort looped just over the crossbar. Kenny David ought to have made it 2-0 when he somehow put wide when a goal looked certain, but before the break the lead was doubled, Davis this time making no mistake to tap home after what was originally a great save by Worner to deny Balanta.
With Sutton not really in the game two changes were made at half time, McAllister and Dundas on for Gueye and Traore. However just three minutes into the half the game was put beyond all doubt when Ferrier was first to react to Worner’s parry from Andrade. To their credit Paul Doswell’s men did improve slightly but were still vulnerable on the break and in the 76th minute it was 4-0. Tom Hitchcock’s header back across goal was met by Davis who made no mistake in firing home. Five minutes later the hosts had another, Hitchcock beating the offside and squaring the ball to Jeffrey who had the simple task of tapping into the unguarded net. Despite the scoreline United actually looked like getting one back in the final few minutes but a good save from Smith from a looping header, before Dan Fitchett miskicked when he found himself in a good area, ensured the clean sheet was safe for Boreham Wood as they advanced to the quarter-finals.
Assistant manager Micky Stephens gave his thoughts to SUFCtv after the game:
“One game too far for us today, we conceded goals at all the wrong times”
“We didn’t have enough numbers tonight, it was a shame for the new French boys to come in – it was a big ask for them to come in, a lot of the game was going around them and it’s hard for them to acclimatise”
On the Solihull game on Saturday and the returning players:
“That’s one of the positives of tonight...we’ve got some numbers back and it’s a massive game for us on Saturday and we need to get ourselves a good result”
