Despite a strong performance from the U’s the long journey home from Guiseley was made with no points to show for the side’s effort, in a game they will feel desperately unlucky to have lost.
In a similar vein to Saturday’s game it was a slow start from Sutton and the home side were ahead within 6 minutes, Jake Cassidy rising highest to meet Hurst’s corner. After this early setback Paul Doswell’s men responded well and wasted no time in looking for an equaliser. Tubbs came close with an effort just wide of the post before Deacon missed by a similarly narrow distance after cutting inside from the left flank. Craig Dundas will feel he ought to have had a penalty when there appeared to be a none too subtle shove in the area, but referee Andrew Miller was unmoved. There was no doubt about the penalty decision that was given though, Tubbs clearly tripped after excellent work by Craig Dundas. Tubbs dusted himself off and scored the penalty, bringing the two sides level heading into half time.
Ross Worner was called into action early in the second half to twice deny Cassidy, who will feel he ought to have scored with a close range header that was held by Worner. Substitute Jordan Preston came close next, firing just over the bar having been set up on the edge of the box. The crucial moment came ten minutes from time after a mistake by Connor Brown allowed Tubbs in. His effort squirmed under Maxted in the Guiseley goal but was cleared off the line by a recovering Brown. Dundas put the loose ball in but the referee blew up for a foul on Brown by Tubbs in his efforts to reach the ball. This came back to haunt United as three minutes into the four added on a low cross was turned in by John Rooney, who had only signed earlier that day, to give Guiseley a late lead. Even then Jamie Collins had a golden opportunity to equalise right at the death but fired over from 6 yards with the defence stranded.
