Securing back to back league wins for the first time since August, Sutton pulled themselves further away from the relegation battle on Tuesday night.

It was a win that was fully deserved, and in reality could have been more than 1-0. The first half saw a fluid performance, with a flurry of chances created. The first of those came courtesy of a long shot from Nicky Bailey, which Biamou was nearly able to put in after it was spilt by Smith in the Boreham Wood goal. To be fair to the keeper he made a few smart stops after this minor error, notably denying Craig Eastmond. Boreham Wood did create chances on the break, the best of them coming to Jeffrey who fired across goal but wide from a tight angle. Despite all the slick passing moves being played Sutton still showed the potential to mix it up, and profited from it after a flick on from Coombes put Biamou in, and he smashed the ball home to put United in front. It should have been 2 when Eastmond was set up by Jebb on the edge of the box but the midfielder got well underneath his effort, giving Boreham Wood a let off. Roarie Deacon was unable to replicate his effort at the weekend with a couple of long range efforts, both over the bar, with Jack Jebb also seeing an effort saved. Having failed to really threaten Boreham Wood should have had one back right at the end of the half, a slip by Simon Downer putting Bruno Andrade in. Sutton’s new on loan keeper Will Puddy spread himself well and made a good save to keep the U’s in front.

The best chance of the second half for Sutton came from a set piece, a corner deflecting inches wide with a goal kick given, though it appeared to come off a white-shirted player. Generally United remained on top against the wind but the visitors were not without chances, Jason Williams going through with the flag staying down, but firing harmlessly over the bar and into the Collingwood Rec under pressure. At the other end the lively Adam Coombes had an effort from 25 yards that was curling inside the post well saved by Smith. Deacon and Gomis both managed to get in behind the defence down the wings but enough bodies in the box from the Wood prevented further scoring on both occasions. With 5 minutes added on the last real chance for an equaliser came from a free kick situated 25 yards from goal, but Andrade’s effort was nowhere near troubling Puddy and Paul Doswell’s men saw out the time added on professionally to gain another big 3 points

Assistant manager Micky Stephens gave his thoughts to SUFCtv after the game:

“I thought we played really well tonight, I thought our passing, our movement, and our interplay in the first half was really slick”

“Our first half performance perhaps warranted a 2 goal lead, but it could so easily have been 1-1 but for terrific goalkeeping from Will (Puddy)”

On the strike partnership between Coombes and Biamou:

“Two centre forwards there in tandem with each other, some of their play and joining up was really good – we looked as though we had 2 centre forwards in the right place at the right time”
