So often the story away from home this season, Sutton put in a good performance but were beaten away from home with a resolute Aldershot riding their luck at times, but taking their chances when they came.
It was the U’s who dominated the early stages, the first shot on goal coming from Kieron Cadogan who’s powerful effort from the edge of the box was tipped wide by Jake Cole in the Aldershot goal – the keeper went on to be awarded the man of the match award. The next big chance fell to Adam Coombes who found himself through on goal but his effort lacked conviction and Cole stood tall to make a good save. It was Coombes causing trouble again minutes later from a corner, reacting first to a loose ball but once again seeing Cole equal to his effort. However at the end of the half it was the Shots who took the lead, Kanu going through and seeing his effort parried by Puddy. Unfortunately in a rather bizarre situation Bailey hit his clearance against the recovering keeper and into the back of the net – a quite unfortunate own goal.
The home side did well to close the game off in the second half and restricted Sutton’s chances. The U’s did have a goal disallowed however after Jamie Collins, who won the knock back across goal, was ruled offside as the ball came in. Up the other end Kundai Benyu saw a freekick from the edge of the box saved by Will Puddy, with the resulting corner coming to nothing. There was a good chance for Kieron Cadogan 20 minutes from time after a deflection on Biamou’s pass fell kindly to him, but his effort was dragged with off the far post with the pressure put on by the recovering defending playing a large part in that. As the clock ran down United pushed men forwards and were caught out on the counter, Straker getting away down the left and crossing to the unmarked Bernard Mensah, who had time to take a touch and pick his spot to make the points safe for the Hampshire side.
