A scintillating Sutton United performance saw them secure all 3 points with a 5-1 hammering of struggling North Ferriby United.

In the very early exchanges it was actually the Villagers on top with Sutton starting slowly, with one effort being fired just over the bar and Puddy called into action to save from Robbie Tinkler. United grew into the game quickly though and nearly took the lead through Maxime Biamou, with Ferriby keeper Rory Watson making a good save. On 14 minutes though a goal did arrive, an excellent cross from Kevin Amankwaah picking out Roarie Deacon, who finished well into the bottom right hand corner. 10 minutes later it was 2-0, a deep free kick only half cleared with Jamie Collins picking up the pieces to volley home through a crowded penalty area. At this point Sutton were dominating with some excellent football being played, though Ferriby still had the odd half chance. Whilst Puddy had to make 2 saves, both from Thompson efforts, he was never particularly troubled. With just over half an hour played the U’s dominance was translated into a 3rd goal, a well worked move releasing Cadogan on the left side with his ball across goal tapped in by Biamou. There were chances for further goals before half time as well, the best of them falling to Cadogan who scuffed his shot into a recovering defender when fed the ball by Biamou.

Ferriby started the second half extremely well and within minutes had a goal back, Tinkler taking advantage of some weak defending to slot home. It could have been 3-2 soon after, though a header from Thompson was too high when he should have done better. This proved costly as Sutton added a fourth on the hour mark, Cadogan being played in before dinking the ball over Watson and into the back of the net. This settled Paul Doswell’s men down and they played the rest of the game in comfort, with Deacon firing an effort just over when through on goal and Biamou seeing a flick on just evading Louis John. There was a 5th goal for Sutton though, and it came in spectacular fashion. Cadogan received the ball from a short corner, and hit a powerful shot that swerved away from the goalkeeper and found the bottom corner, nestling perfectly on the inside of the side netting. Eastmond and Biamou both came close with good chances in the dying stages of the game as Sutton comfortably saw out the game.

Manager Paul Doswell was understandably delighted with how the day went:

“Pleased for everyone really, good crowd here again today and I thought we treated them to some outstanding periods of football”

“Playing against the wind in that first half took some getting used to, but once we did and once our play got going I thought we were outstanding”

“It was a much needed win, there was pressure on the game today – we turned it into a pressure game as well”

“We singled out the front four, and put some responsibility on them, and they responded really well”
