Sutton were dealt a blow on Saturday as they slipped to a late defeat at Woking, despite having dominated the second half.
The U’s were poor in the first 45 however and fell behind early on, an excellent Nathan Ralph cross met by an equally impressive Delano Sam-Yorke header which gave Puddy in the Sutton goal no chance. There were few other chances in the first half, Kieran Murtagh coming the closest to doubling the Cards’ lead when his effort deflected just wide of the post with Puddy wrong footed. Struggling to get into the game, United’s best chance came from a set piece with Jamie Collins seeing his header cleared off the line, and Nicky Bailey heading over minutes later.
Having clearly received a strong team talk at half time Sutton came out the blocks much quicker in the second half and immediately looked to get on the front foot. Just 2 minutes into the half Deacon was allowed a completely free header inside the box from a corner but headed wide of the far post. Woking replied to this scare by nearly extending their lead, Puddy making an excellent save to deny Sam-Yorke. Sutton did soon get their reward for an improved second half though, albeit in somewhat bizarre circumstances as a defensive clearance clattered off Cadogan and into the back of the net. A couple of minutes later Ben Jefford came close to giving United the lead, but Cards keeper Michael Poke was equal to the effort. Up the other end Puddy was forced into a good save from Murtagh’s free kick. The killer blow to Sutton came 7 minutes from time, Ugwu getting free in the box after a swift Woking counter attack and finishing on second attempt. Despite their efforts The U’s never really threatened an equaliser with Woking seeing the game out well.
Paul Doswell gave his thoughts to SUFCtv after the game:
“It’s hard to take, there’s a disappointed dressing room but like I said, one more win and everyone can relax”
“We weren’t overly happy with where we were at half time, we didn’t feel we had the energy”
“In the second half after quite a vocal half time team talk I thought the lads came out and dominated the second half, and played some good football”
