A fast paced and attacking performance saw Sutton cruise to victory against Chester, propelling them into the top half of the league with a game to go.

Paul Doswell’s men started quickly and took the lead after just 5 minutes. Good work from Nicky Bailey won the ball back on the halfway line and he played in Coombes, who smashed a dipping and swerving shot into the back of the net from all of 20 yards. Three minutes later the lead was doubled through another fantastic goal. Adam May, picking the ball up 30 yards from goal, had a look up and with nothing else on went for goal. The ball flew into the top right hand corner of the goal – an unstoppable effort. United pushed for more goals, Monakana coming close with an effort just over from the edge of the penalty area, and it took the away side until midway through the second half to create any sort of opportunity. Centre back Ryan Astles was allowed to run a long way with the ball and fired just over the bar with his shot. Pressure from Sutton resumed after this point though with Chester keeper Lynch making a few great saves, first to deny Coombes inside the area after Cadogans’s cutback, and then to tip over a Nicky Bailey effort from the edge of the box. It was 3-0 before half time though, Jamie Collins curling a beautiful freekick into the ‘postage stamp’ position in the top left hand corner of the goal, giving Lynch no chance.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first, with the lead extended just a minute after the restart. A cross from captain Jamie Collins was met by Adam Coombes, who made no mistake to double his tally and all but end the game as a contest. Ten minutes later Craig Eastmond came close to adding another but was denied by a good save by Lynch, with the Blues’ keeper denying Coombes from the resulting corner. Further chances followed for Coombes and substitute Jack Jebb, though neither could add to the United goals tally. Up the other end Will Puddy made an excellent save to deny Durrell after his effort from 25 yards looked destined for the top corner. With 20 minutes to go Nicky Bailey made it 5-0 with an excellent effort from the edge of the box. After a corner was only half cleared the midfielder picked the ball up and hit a half volley from 30 yards that spun away from Lynch and into the back of the net. To their credit Chester showed a bit of fight in the last 10 minutes, getting two goals back and threatening a third. The first came after a horrendous mistake by Will Puddy, making a mess of a clearance outside the box gifting James Alabi an open goal. Alabi scored again a few minutes later, cutting inside onto his left foot and curling the effort into the far corner. Lloyd had one last chance for the visitors but the game still ended in relative comfort for Sutton, who are now into the top half of the table.

Paul Doswell gave his thoughts to SUFCtv afterwards:
