A Sutton United Front: A Season To Remember

It’s worth using this week’s column to reflect on the excellent season we’ve had, capped off by securing a top half finish with a draw at Macclesfield.

I think most of us would have taken a finish just above the relegation zone for a first year in the National League, with any cup runs a bonus.

To finish 8 points clear of the drop zone despite the fixture congestion resulting from our epic cup run is impressive, and gives me reason to think we can push on next season in the league, especially if we don’t have a cup distraction.

That’s not to say I don’t want another cup run though!

This year’s FA Cup exploits have given me some of the happiest memories of my life, being on a crowded terrace with my best mates seeing us reach the 3rd round for the first time in my lifetime was good enough – I would never have foreseen what was to happen next.

The win at AFC Wimbledon was something else, and knocking out the famous Leeds United live on TV was simply unbelievable.

I’m still getting over the fact Sutton United vs Arsenal was a competitive fixture, and ‘competitive’ isn’t just being used as a definition here – Wenger’s men knew they were in for a game and it would have been an interesting last 10 minutes if that Deacon effort had gone under, rather than into, the crossbar.

So begins the long wait for next season, with a great deal of intrigue over what it could bring…
