Tooting put in a competent performance in the summer rain at Imperial Fields this afternoon as three goals in the final seven minutes of the first half put the game beyond the reach of neighbours Carshalton Athletic.

For most of the opening 35 minutes Tooting appeared happy to sit back in their own half and allow Carshalton possession in the middle of the park but applied the pressure in the two thirds of the field where it matter most.

It was the visitors who looked like they were going to be first to strike though when the referee pointed to the spot following an innocuous challenge on the edge of the box. Tommy Bradford stepped up confidently to take the kick, but aiming to Kyle Merson’s right, he placed the ball at a comfortable height for the Tooting ‘keeper to parry the ball back out as he flung himself towards the ball. Bradford was first to the rebound but striking it first time he could only balloon it over via the top of the crossbar.

The opening goal of the game came on 38 minutes when Jake Baxter was unable get on the end of Jordan Wilson’s excellent cross from out on the right however, substitute Juevan Spencer, on for the injured Tenny Adebowale, was on hand to bundle the ball home from close range. Six minutes later, some good work from Billy Dunn as he attacked the Carshalton defence, saw him lay the ball back to Ollie Bennett in a central position, for the midfielder to strike a well hit shot into the back of the net from 12 yards out. And within 60 seconds it was three to the Terrors as Angelo Banton failed to the ball with his feet and instead simply presented the ball to Jake Baxter who was closing in on him and happy to accept the gift.

Tooting suffered an early blow soon after the re-start, when Mike Dixon, on for Jake Baxter pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring injury as he fired in his first shot on goal after only two minutes of the half. Whilst clear cut chances were few and far between in the second half, Tooting remained firmly in control and finally sealed things in the 82nd minute when trialist Ola Rabiu broke down the left, burst between two Carshalton defenders before playing the ball into the path of the supporting Sandy Cunningham who managed to find the back of the net from the acutest of angles at the far post.
