A Sutton United Front: Defensive Masterclass In Front Of The Cameras

Well how about that for a way to start the season, a crowd of over 3000, plus thousands more watching on TV as our lads secured a deserved 2-0 win over Leyton Orient.

In truth the neutral viewer may have felt slightly disappointed with the game but Sutton did everything right against one of the title favourites this season, getting ahead early on and defending solidly throughout.

The second goal, of course, helped to steady any late nerves.

The defensive side of the game is often overlooked in football amongst the conversation in the pub after a game, but on Saturday even the untrained eye could see just how class the back four were.

Orient never had a sniff, Jamie Butler having a very quiet debut – though any pressure he was put under he dealt with confidently.

It’s easy to stick with the theme of strong performances from the defenders, given both our goals were scored by them!

Jamie Collins once again showed nerves of steel from the penalty spot, before Dean Beckwith finished well from a great ball in courtesy of Ross Lafayette.

As Doswell mentioned in his interview, all of the new players slotted in seamlessly to the side and all looked like they could add something, any fears of struggling after losing Deacon and Biamou already long gone.

Tuesday night at Eastleigh will be a very tough encounter, the big spending Hampshire side will be expecting to win after limping to a draw at Bromley at the weekend.

However I genuinely think we can beat anyone on our day, and the Spitfires should be worried
