Saturday was a reminder of why we all love football – a fantastic performance against the title favourites upsetting all the odds, especially with our poor away form of last season, to claim a famous win.
It was thoroughly deserved too, and even most of the home fans would agree with that statement.
My main regret from the Eastleigh game was that we set up too defensively, but there were no such concerns from the off at Prenton Park with an attacking lineup instantly putting pressure on the hosts, making them uncomfortable.
Though Tranmere probably shaded the early stages U’s were always dangerous and got their reward after half an hour when Dundas went through and volleyed home.
This required a tactical shift naturally to protect the lead, and for the rest of the first half and the entirety of the second the home side were kept at an arm’s length.
Beckwith and Collins were once again superb, and despite getting caught out of position a few times in the first half Aswad Thomas showed much better positional awareness in the second, and his ability as a defender meant he too had an excellent game.
Man of the match would probably have to go to Craig Dundas however – Tranmere simply could not deal with him at all and his goal was well deserved.
Beating the title favourites away from home is a strong message that this side can beat anyone on their day, and it paves the way for another exciting season
