Just when it looked like Sutton would never score at Gander Green Lane on Tuesday night lightning struck twice, with goals from Moses Emmanuel and Tommy Wright inside a three minute spell turning the game on its head late on.

Whilst the better side generally over the course of the evening were the home side, it was Macclesfield who dominated the early exchanges. Indeed it only took 2 minutes for them to open the scoring, and what a goal it was too. Scott Wilson ran on to a lofted through ball and struck a first time volley from 20 yards that Butler in the Sutton goal had no chance with. Wilson had another great opportunity 10 minutes later but could only head over when gifted a free header inside the penalty box. United grew into the game however and created a good opportunity on 18 minutes, Wright slipping in behind the defence but denied by a quick thinking Billy O’Brien, who was easily the Silkmen’s man of the match on the night. More chances followed, with Lafayette close to scoring an identical goal to Wilson’s only to be denied by the excellent goalkeeper. The next to be denied was Louis John, whose volley from a deep cross was instinctively tipped over the bar. Minutes earlier the young centre back had headed over from a corner, Jamie Collins also coming close with a header from a set piece.

The second half continued where the first had left off, with Davis thinking he had equalised within 5 minutes of the restart after he was first to the rebound off Lafayette’s effort off the post. However the linesman flagged very late and the goal was ruled out – replays appear to show the decision was incorrect and the goal should have stood. Further chances came and went, Spence scuffing wide from a clear shooting opportunity on the edge of the box, John volleying over from close range, and several scrambles in the box just not quite falling to an amber shirt. However just as it looked as if Macclesfield were taking the points a long kick from Butler was flicked on by Lafayette and Moses Emmanuel poked home to level it. A minute later a Dan Spence cross was headed away, but only as far as Tommy Wright who coolly placed his effort into the far corner, sparking incredible celebrations around Gander Green Lane. The remaining three minutes plus added time were comfortably seen out to secure another memorable win.
