In a pulsating game on Saturday Sutton struck late to secure victory having previously lost a 2 goal lead, with a goal wrongly disallowed in the middle of that period.

The first half performance from Paul Doswell’s men was excellent and it took just 5 minutes for U’s to take the lead. A throw in from the right hand side pinged about the Chester box and was eventually laid back for Louis John, who hit a first time effort powerfully into the top corner – a fine strike, especially for a centre back. There was no let up in pressure from the visitors though, and Lafayette nearly doubled the lead when he latched onto the rebound of his first effort, hitting a tricking effort just wide. Kenny Davis will feel he should have at least hit the target when allowed time and space on the edge of the Chester box, and Tommy Wright fired inches wide after an excellent run not long after. A second goal was in the pipeline and it arrived on 44 minutes, Davis winning the ball in midfield and playing Wright in, the youngster finishing expertly from a tough angle. However there was to be no 2 goal cushion at half time when a minute later a corner was only half cleared and Craig Mahon fired in from the edge of the box.

There was controversy early in the second half as a Nicky Bailey freekick from 40 yards, meant as a cross, went all the way in and the goal given with little protest from the hosts, bar number 6 Ryan Astles who went over to the linesman. This triggered the referee to head over too, and after a long conversation the goal was disallowed just as the teams were ready to kickoff again, the decision given on the idea that Collins had touched the ball from an offside position though he looked several yards away from actually reaching it at all. The sense of injustice was deepened when 10 minutes later Lucas Dawson fired in a shot from the edge of the box that fizzed into the bottom corner to make it 2-2. From this point it was Chester doing most of the pushing and Astles ought to have headed home from close range from a corner, but the three substitutes brought on by Doswell were to have the final say. Josh Taylor halted a Chester counter attack inside his own half before bringing on a break of his own, eventually passing to Emmanuel who flicked the ball into the path of Cadogan. With Chester again appealing for an offside, this time not given, Cadogan cheekily chipped the keeper to send the away end into raptures and send his side back to London with all 3 points.
