On a hot bank holiday Monday in South London it was Sutton who prevailed in the derby game, putting in a convincing performance to ensure the short journey home was made with all 3 points.
With both sides rotating their starting line ups after defeat on Saturday there were initially few chances, the best of Bromley’s falling to Brett Williams who sliced well wide from distance. However U’s began to gain control of the game and Kieran Cadogan nearly gave his side the lead only to be excellently denied by David Gregory. It was the same player coming close again 5 minutes later, an effort curled just wide of the post from distance. However in the 24th minute deadlock was broken as the ball was worked into Craig Eastmond at the right hand side of the penalty area, and this time the finish was unstoppable – hammered into the top right corner to give Sutton a well deserved lead. For the rest of the half chances were few and far between, Louis John seeing a header easily saved and a Moses Emmanuel effort deflected behind for a corner.
The pressure was on Bromley to respond in the second half but they offered little in the way of chances and in fairness Jamie Butler in the Sutton goal was rarely troubled. They did come somewhat close when a deep freekick was met by Josh Rees but his looping header landed on the roof of the net. Indeed the only real moment of panic in the away end was when Jamie Collins’ header back to his keeper actually beat Jamie Butler but trickled inches wide. The best chances fell to Paul Doswell’s men, with Josh Taylor benefitting from Dundas winning the ball high up the pitch, though his effort was curled just wide. Aswad Thomas really ought to have made it 2-0 in the 85th minute but scuffed wide from 6 yards out, but Bromley couldn’t take advantage and after 6 minutes of additional time the whistle was blown, signalling the return of Sutton to the top of the table.
