Despite a much improved performance at Dog Kennel Hill this afternoon, Tooting were unable to hold on to their early lead against a physically strong, and quick Dulwich Hamlet side.
After a disappointing showing against Enfield on Saturday, Tooting started today’s game in strong fashion and looked to push their hosts back at every opportunity. The Terrors took the lead on 6 minutes after a mazy run into the penalty area from Dan Clements was brought to an end illegally and the referee pointed immediately to the spot. Billy Dunn stepped up to take the kick, sending Preston Edwards in the Hamlet goal the wrong way.
Tooting continued to press forward and for most of the remainder of the first half looked to match or better their opponents in both their determination to win the ball and the accuracy of their short, quick passing. Despite this however they were unable to create any clear cut chances and the teams went into the break with no addition to the scoreline.
In the second half there was clearly a change of approach from the home side who appeared to go up several gears with most of the game now being played in the Tooting half. Nevertheless, Tooting continued to defend valiantly, as they had done when required in the first half, as Hamlet steadily built up the pressure. The pressure finally paid off though for Hamlet on the hour mark as they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. It was taken by skipper Kenny Beaney who struck the ball low and accurately, into the bottom right hand corner of Kyle Merson’s net. Hamlet continued to pile on the pressure with the Terrors holding on for a further 20 minutes before Beaney finally struck the winner for Dulwich ten minutes from time.
