An excellent performance from Sutton on Tuesday night saw them steal a thoroughly deserved late winner, putting U’s back at the top of the table after 10 games.

The first half was fairly quiet, Paul Doswell’s men starting brightly with Dundas denied early on at the home keeper’s near post, but it was Dagenham who soon began to take a hold of the game. Though few chances were created they did take the lead on 22 minutes, Aswad Thomas caught upfield and out of position as a ruthless counter attack saw Corey Whitely get in on goal, and he made no mistake with his finish to put his side 1-0 up. It was through long throws that Sutton looked most like scoring, Tommy Wright getting on the end of one with a header that just cleared the crossbar, and Davis later seeing an effort from inside the box well blocked. Just before half time U’s were level, Kwame Thomas doing well to win a knock down, which Dundas volleyed in to score his 100th goal for the club, songs of ‘legend’ from the away end to congratulate him.

Whilst the attacking fluidity in the first half had perhaps been slightly lacking there was no real weakness in the second half performance with United always looking in control bar a small spell. Eastmond came close with a long range drive the keeper did well to hold, and Dundas was unlucky to see a defender just beat him to the ball on another occasion when a failure to do so would have allowed the big man to double his goal tally. Up the other end there was one heart in mouth moment when Chike Kandi got away from Downer, but his effort was cleared off the line by the excellent Eastmond and the rebound scuffed over by Jake Howells. Sutton looked lively with Taylor, Cadogan, and Jeffrey coming on and Josh Taylor came close to scoring 5 minutes from time when his effort fizzed just wide of the post. Just as Dagenham looked to slow the game down and see out a point the winner did come for U’s, a fantastic Dan Spence cross met by an equally good Kenny Davis header to send the away end into raptures and Sutton United to the top of the table.
