Saturday evening had a familiar feeling for Sutton as they returned to the top of the table yet again, this time after securing a hard-fought 3-2 win over Barrow.
The game started brightly enough for U’s, who hit the post just 2 minutes in. A throw in found Jamie Collins in space, his cross met by Moses Emmanuel who was inches away from scoring. Barrow struggled to gain a foothold in the early stages with United well on top, Eastmond having the next chance, but his shot was saved by the visitors’ keeper. On 25 minutes the deadlock was broken, Aswad Thomas with a deep freekick that curled all the way in to the far post without being touched on the way through. However this seemed to spark the Cumbrians into life and 15 minutes later they were level, Cadogan taking too long to clear and giving away a penalty which former Carshalton Athletic man Byron Harrison tucked away.
Whilst there may have been disappointment going into the break it didn’t take long for Sutton to seize control in the second half, a scramble in the box falling to Josh Taylor who poked the ball past Joel Dixon in the Barrow goal. Just 3 minutes later Paul Doswell’s men had another goal. A long ball forward saw Lafayette draw two defenders out of position, his flick finding Craig Eastmond who unselfishly squared to Moses Emmanuel who could not miss from 2 yards out. Emmanuel nearly had another straight after when his effort from the edge of the box was cleared off the line by a defender, but just when it seemed U’s might run away with it Barrow had a goal back. A freekick from a wide position was not cleared and eventually fell to Harrison, who notched his second goal of the game. The better chances in the remaining 20 minutes fell to Sutton, with Dixon saving well from Taylor before denying Eastmond too from the following corner. Ross Lafayette came close with a header not long after, but U’s couldn’t find a fourth goal and right at the death Barrow had a great opportunity when the ball fell to Donovan Makoma after a scramble. Fortunately he volleyed his effort far too high and not long after the whistle was blown, signalling Sutton’s return to the top
