Just when it looked like all was lost a late Ross Lafayette stunner helped Sutton to an excellent point at Wrexham, keeping U’s solidly in the playoff places.

It was, in truth, a game of few chances though United did have the better of the possession early on. The hosts were defensively solid and after 15 minutes were ahead. A catalogue of errors in the U’s defence eventually allowed a Chris Holroyd cross to reach Marcus Kelly, who could not miss. The Welsh club pushed for a second goal, with Rutherford proving particularly problematic though neither Holroyd nor Reid could convert from his crosses. There was one chance for Nicky Bailey just before the break, his shot deflected wide by a red shirt.

The start to the second half from Sutton was brighter and they registered their first shot on target when a fierce Josh Taylor half-volley was parried away by goalkeeper Coddington. Both Anthony Jeffrey and Kieron Cadogan were soon introduced from the bench, and Cadogan was inches away from equalising when he hit the top of the crossbar after finding himself in a shooting position just inside the box. Josh Taylor too came close, forcing Coddington into a smart save at his near post after a mazy run got him free of defenders. Wrexham were not shy of the counter attack however and Ntumba Massanka really ought to have put the game to bed with 5 minutes to go, but he could only fire wide when one-on-one with Butler. The same player saw an effort from the edge of the box well saved by Butler minutes later. Into stoppage time a long ball forward was only half cleared by a Wrexham defender, allowing Lafayette to control the ball and exquisitely volley in off the bar from the edge of the box, once again sparking delirium amongst the travelling support who are now enjoying vital late goals with some regularity
