U’s were not at their absolute best on Saturday, but still did enough to secure the 3 points against a Fylde side who ended the game with 10 men.

The early stages of the game saw both sides battle it out for superiority with neither really clearly better than the other. There was a half chance after 2 minutes or so for Sutton captain Jamie Collins but he could only head over the bar. Fylde’s first opening came after a defensive mistake, Rowe nearly reaching a header back to Jamie Butler before the keeper did, though Butler was able to do enough to force the striker wide and away from danger. Though there were few clear cut chances Josh Taylor did hit the post midway through the first half after a low corner caught out the visiting defence. It was in the 41st minute that the game sprung to life, a long ball forward catching out Fylde’s substitute centre back Jason Taylor. Whilst Lafayette was fouled a good advantage was played and Dundas raced through to score and put U’s ahead. One minute later the lead was doubled, Josh Taylor going on a mazy run beating several players before pulling the ball back with Simon Grand unable to avoid putting through his own net.

The visiting side came out for the second half extremely early and had seemingly had strong words said to them at the break as they started the half brightly. However the best chance fell to Sutton, Louis John hitting the bar with a header from a Nicky Bailey freekick. The task for the Lancashire side got harder on the hour mark when Lewis Montrose picked up two yellow cards in as many minutes, leaving his side a man down. Paul Doswell looked to take advantage of the situation, bringing on Anthony Jeffrey and Tommy Wright, and both players caused havoc with Jeffrey shooting just over, and Tommy Wright hammering a shot into the post minutes later. However with 5 minutes to go a long throw in eventually fell to Simon Grand who made no mistake to bring the score back to 2-1. Late pressure was placed on U’s, Butler making one excellent save from a long range Rowe effort, but they held on to move 4 points inside the playoff spots.
